Karupelv Valley Project

Started in 1988, the Karupelv Valley Project (KVP), led by Dr. Benoît Sittler, is an ongoing, long term research project in North-East Greenland. It is jointly carried out under the auspices of the University Freiburg (GER) and the Groupe de Recherche en Ecologie Arctique (F). Its  main objective is to provide new insights into the processes that govern cyclic fluctuations of lemming populations in high-arctic ecosystems.

In recent years, the project has received increased attention from the scientific community for its outstanding research achievements. Besides the scientific approach, KVP aims at providing the general public with fantastic insights into the investigations of a simplified yet complex arctic ecosystem. The educational outreach of KVP intends to encourage awareness and interest for the Arctic and includes working with the media, for example within the scope of public lectures and nature documentaries. In addition, special event souvenir covers commemorating each expedition within this project in the North East Greenland National Park. Subscriptions for such prized items are proposed for envelopes bearing the project and expedition cachets and hand-cancelled in Greenlandic stations.

Field work will be continued this summer. Besides the standard surveys devoted to lemmings and their predators (snowy owls, arctic foxes, stoats, etc.), the studies increasingly focus lies on the effects of global change on the Arctic environment. Observations over the past couple of years have clearly shown that climate change is already noticeably affecting the Arctic environment within the study area.
